Yes - the financial expenditure most women feel obliged to fork out for make-up, , fashionable clothes, etc etc, are billion dollar industries.

There are push backs for women like myself, who do not wear makeup - beign symbolic of adult femaleness, one gets infantilised and not taken seriously! To be socially acceptable women are supposed to 'make an effort', ie wear the latest trends expressing 'self-care'.

There are huge health ramifications , as you say, but all this is normalised while other values eg that of not displaying one's body are viewed as 'controlling.
