Yes, it is not that simple when children are involved and the version of reality they are being given, will damage their relationship with you... so to 'not engage, not seek to rebuff the slander etc means you are accepting the version of events and the tarnishing of your character, in the eyes of the children you love... so this creates alienation which can be lifelong, if not addressed.
