However, elections in these countries (and really most ‘Western democracies’) are arguably somewhat of a sham for other reasons not elucidated by The Economist — a newspaper which is typically a champion of neoliberal capitalism (in The 18th Brumaire of Louise Bonaparte, written in 1852, Karl Marx refers to The Economist as “the aristocracy of finance”, a claim which still rings true today).
