But all you want to ask me is, ‘Why you didn’t get married? You are sweet and kind and you look rather pretty…

Excuse me while I leave, to roam the streets and scream my heart out.

Yes, police officer, maybe I am having a nervous breakdown. Is that against the law? I promise I’ll try to re-hinge myself quietly over there. No, I don’t think so, I wouldn’t be so inconsiderate as to throw myself off a bridge during rush hour traffic, just because little old me is very upset. Can’t I cry in peace? No, I’m not a danger to others nor to myself. Really, I don’t plan to trouble anyone. Trouble… That word again… Yeah, I confess, I do often get called a ‘troublemaker’.

I recall…

When my mother said my monthly blood was a sign of being dirty, I didn’t agree. My mother said I was defying Allah and so… I was in trouble.

When my white teacher said my writing was so good I must have copied it and so for working very hard and doing my research very well, I was again in trouble.
