Selfishness and stupid reign in most households where daughters are controlled like this. The solution is to get out and stay away, and meet only in public spaces, if at all. It is not too late to do so, for the writer of the article. Women need to reach out and form bonds of friendship and community with other women, so we can be free of such families and not be isolated.
