There is no incentive to be a martyr who sacrifices everything for students because in a public bureaucratic institution, it’s often the magicians who get ahead the most. They’re the ones who use sleight of hand to deflect responsibility on someone else whenever there’s an issue, and who take credit for accomplishments they had no part of. Actually doing the work, doing a good job, and taking on more obligations to help the organization often does not manifest itself in reward.
