The ideology’s abstract is often represented through surrealism. Surrealism is the unconscious mind manifesting into reality through a series of illogical or dreamlike sequences. This is best exemplified in Kafka’s most famous work, The Metamorphosis, in which Gregor Samsa is inexplicably turned into a giant insect. Rather than concern over Gregor’s changing appearance, everyone is concerned with his inability to continue providing for his family. Gregor’s introspections about his financial dedication to his family at the cost of human experiences is actualized into him turning into less than human. His family’s animalization of him is juxtaposed with his humanity sustaining within him. The absurdity and impossibility of a man turning into a bug matches the cognitive dissonance that Gregor is experiencing.
