Ingalls Wilder was always satisfied by simple unassuming farm life. As she and her husband reached their later years, they sold much of their farm land, but maintained their house and a small garden to live out the remainder of their days. She tasted fame and big paychecks, but ultimately preferred the way of life she was used to — and one which didn’t require her to send the government a portion of her hard-earned income.

This actually reveals her petty-minded and mean spirit. No idea about 'the greater good'. Just if 'it doesn't benefit me and mine, then stuff it. ' Indeed this is the Palefaces' disease. I enjoyed that idealised whitewashing as a child - until I grew top and realised the whole thing was a big fat White lie.
