There is a vicious double standard operating in religious-led societies, whereby if males break the rules such as fraternising with women they are not supposed to, people mostly turn a blind eye; if he marries that woman, they will be forced to accept the relationship.

This does not happen regarding women's rights to think and feel and make choices re who they love and commit to ... such women are usually killed or at the very least, ostracised - which is a sort of social death. Myra's tremendous courage and integrity, should be given respect and applauded. Terrible that no-one in that neighbourhood risked their skin to rescue her and she died wounded and alone.
