Is this to say complexity is always a bad thing? Of course not. The point of the analogy is to make clear the appropriate moral framework. Where a witness sees something evil, and seeks to discuss it in a way that obscures its fundamental features, that impedes sympathy and action from other observers, they are not performing a helpful act of witnessing. Zadie Smith’s essay is bad, not because she has added complexity and nuance, but because she has sought to prevent understanding, by obscuring the straightforward in a smog of fake complexity. She may not consider herself Israel’s accomplice, but that is what she has chosen to become.
