Mamie’s decision inspired Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat. It drew mourners by the tens of thousands to Emmett’s funeral, and millions more saw his photo on the cover of newspapers and magazines. It forced America, quite literally, to come face to face with racism. Something which Mamie — even as a black woman living in a segregated America — realised she hadn’t done:
