Superb expression of the multi-faceted and so often oppressive realities that women in all patriarchal cultures have to cope with - I concur on all the point you are raising... the article is really addressing the circles of white feminism I knew in my 20's, 30's and 40's, in which the dominant view was that western women are blessed to live in 'advanced' societies here they are free and have many choices, while women in Easter/traditional/Black Brown/Asian/Muslim societies are living under backward traditions harking to the savagery of primitive people lacking the benefits of education and science and imposing horrible conditions on women and girls... I was definitely influenced by this narrative and then personal expereince of oppression in more subtle forms, and most particularly seeing the contrast in later life between Kitty and Aisha, got me questioning the Western feminist paradigm. As I say in the article too, noticing how some arranged marriages can achieve deep emotional and psychological satisfaction and security, does not mean the negatives - such as valuing virginity above the life of a woman are not horrific and cruel aspects that need to challenged and changed.
