The incentive to mask one's racism under the guise of "anti-diversity" is to obscure intent. "Covert racism is often disguised" to maintain the racial hierarchy while avoiding any accountability for doing so. While it's fair to say that explicitly racist language is socially unacceptable in the post-civil rights era, adopting a strategy of covert racism allows White people to maintain a position of privilege while denying any such disparities exist.
