These potent variables encourage a willingness to conform to social norms, beliefs and conduct, irrespective of moral imperatives or even truth for that matter. In fact, more often than not we yield to collective trends so as to resist incurring the inevitable repercussions of upsetting the status quo.

Painfully true.
In my experience, work colleagues, social activists and family members prefer to comply than question an unjust status quo. This is why society has changed so little from one generation to another, and authority figures wielding brute force combined with various kinds of psychological manipulations, usually prevail.
