The horrible periodic persecutions and pogroms in Europe/Russia , meant they always tried to build up gold reserves as a security measure/safety blanket.

They spent several centuries, funding the Atlantic slave and associated trades, and from the proceeds of those, well invested, have they not bought out/bribed the opposition, wherever they go.

Of course, apart frmm amassing wealth, their unity is their greatest strength.
