My own mother grew up on a farm in India, and they also had a flock of goats, kept a cow, chickens, grew their own veg, and had an orchard of fruit trees, along with beehives . Their were specialisms such as the miller who ground the wheat, the blacksmith for repairing pots, a local healer who knew who could set bones and knew which herbs were good for what... money rarely exchanged hands - for nearly all of the necessities for life, they as a village were self -sufficient.
