It seems to me that concerning moral questions and situations of the abuse of power across generations, sitting on the fence is a strange place to settle upon - an abdication of responsibility, really. The great Toni Morrison's words come to mind, 'The purpose of freedom is to free someone else'". Sitting on fences might be safe but does it accomplish anything more?.
