In contrast to the intellectual focus of Western approaches to the Self, Iqbal, like many other Islamic thinkers and Sufis, emphasized the application of adab as a necessary catalyst in attaining knowledge of the Self and thereby attaining self-transformation. Adab symbolizes the respect and self-discipline that is pertinent in allowing for an internal transformation in the Muslim on the path to knowledge.

IHow wish these ideas and concepts were better known in the diaspora of 2nd generation South Asians. I believe many live a kind of schizophrenic life. At school/college/work, beign int individualistic self, and then returning to family home. tha tis run on a collectivist principle.
