I think that is quite a deep question. Surely, it's simply about justifying their existence and pay checks. Bullshit jobs by David Graeber comes to mind. Work that has no intrinsic worth or meaning, but the system generates to justify itself. One could say the entire edifice of Western civilisation is one gigantic cancerous growth on the earth's ecological wealth and Majority people's resources and labour.
