I think both aspects are true : that we have as you say, too many 'consumption-driven must have everything at our fingertips' people, as well as an unprecedented population explosion that has taken place over the past 70 or so years.

I agree to some degree, about the Just Stop Oil protestors using the products of the oil industry can be in some ways duplicitous, but they would argue that as individuals they are trapped in this system; their protests are seeking to make government pass policies to control corporations and where money for research goes to find alternatives. Many of the protesters I personally know, are people of goodwill who have indeed, been recycling, don't own a car, etc etc.
