I do wonder why in liberal professional /academic discourse being straightforward and truthful is called, being 'outspoken'.

Such labeling presumes a consensus amongst those who have determined what constitutes the 'normal/acceptable bounderies - and then anyone speaking beyond this predetermined line, is given labels like outspoken, challenging, difficult. These terms are just a step or two removed from labelling who you don't agree with, 'troublemaker'.
