What you have just said reminds me of my sisters, who complied with tradition-based demands though they hardly were a good fit in new circumstances and a different non-agrarian society.

But the (unspoken) deal was,

obey us, and if things go wrong, we will look after you.

Disobey us, follow your heart, and you will be on your own.
