I chose not to have children as I couldnt stand the leel of inequality in the world that I saw, in the 1980's, along with the spectre of nuclear radiation ... but as you say, most people think only of their own satisfaction and safety - having children to gain status and power is the norm... In ENgland, people get financially rewareded the more childrne they have, so th emost lazy and stupid, are incentivised to have more.
