A lot of self-exposure here but I did publish this in the publication, Memorialist.

For context, my mother and siblings went to Mecca a few weeks ago, but as usual she only mentioned it a few days before leaving, but expected me to drop everything to visit her before she left.

I changed my lifelong pattern and did not do that.

I grew up in a white community with us beign the only South Asian/Muslim(ish) family so I could never work out what were the idiosyncrasies of my parents adn what was actually Muslim tradition. In a way, it doesn't matter as the whole thing is a patriarchal construction anyway!
