Check your breath
Upon the mirror
Brief our days
In space and time.
On ancient temples
Sanskrit verses
Reverberate
On stone and marble
Is writing not
Our breath inscribed

No, it's absolutely not a lack of emotional awareness - they are getting a sense of power and pleasure through deliberately hurting you. That's simply nasty and sadistic - the person hardly deserves to be called human. No excuses, just get the F away !
Sadly, you are right about that... I see the West as an entity that over the past 500 years, has rewarded greed and psychopathic behaviour through creating an entire system of societal/economic and legal structures such that anyone who seeks to be fair and compassionate in their dealings with others, is defined as a loser who deserves to be taken advantage of. Other societies had their class of greedy, power-seeking exploiters, but their moral compass did not collapse such that viciousness is redefined as say, efficiency and then, is seen as acceptable and even appluaded by the majority.
